CHAIRPERSON INSTEAD OF
chairman. Husband and wife instead of
man and wife. “A big job” instead of “a
man’s job.”
Intensifying its campaign for the use
of gender-fair language, the Supreme
Court has approved an administrative
circular directing all justices, judges, and
judiciary personnel to use non-sexist
language, like the examples above, in all
official documents, communications, and
issuances. The circular was pursuant to a
Civil Service Commission memorandum
circular which encourages the use of nonsexist
language to promote gendersensitivity
in the bureaucracy. (Re: Use of
Gender-Fair Language, AM No. 06-8-21-
SC, September 5, 2006)
